Abstract: ABSTRACT SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR INERTIA ESTIMATION IN A RENEWABLE ENERGY DOMINATED POWER SYSTEM A system and method for estimating inertia in a renewable energy-dominated power system interconnected with neighbouring power systems. The system employs high-resolution synchronized measurement devices to capture frequency data at synchronous generators, alongside a measurement infrastructure providing real-time MVA ratings, connected demand, and tie-line power flows. An offline estimation module processes historical grid event data to compute area-wise frequency values, rate of change of frequency from the centre of inertia, total interconnected system inertia, and isolated internal system inertia by excluding neighbouring system contributions. These computed datasets train machine learning models within an online estimation engine, enabling continuous real-time inertia estimation during normal system operation. The online module sequentially estimates total system inertia, tie-line inertia contributions, internal system inertia, and demand-side inertia by segregating synchronous generator inertia — providing operators with comprehensive, real-time inertia visibility critical for maintaining power system stability.
