Abstract: ABSTRACT TERRACOTTA IN-VESSEL COMPOSTING APPARATUS A terracotta in-vessel composting apparatus and a method of composting biodegradable organic waste are disclosed. The apparatus comprises a vessel body formed from porous fired terracotta material defining an enclosed composting chamber, a top opening for waste loading, a removable lid with ventilation apertures, a compost outlet in the lower portion for compost retrieval, and a base support portion. Passive aeration of the composting mass is effected by diffusion of ambient air through the porous terracotta walls, and moisture self-regulation is achieved by absorption of excess moisture into the terracotta microstructure and evaporative release from the outer vessel surface, without any external energy input or mechanical device. The thermal mass of the terracotta material maintains optimal temperature for aerobic microbial decomposition. The apparatus is low-cost, fabricated from ecologically sustainable and locally available material, operable without electricity or maintenance expertise, and produces high-quality stabilized compost suitable for agricultural application.
