Abstract: Abstract The present invention relates to the fields of environmental monitoring, Internet of Things (IoT), geospatial analytics and intelligent transportation systems. More particularly, the invention provides a scalable urban air-quality monitoring and modelling system that combines data from fixed government monitoring stations, stationary low-cost sensing nodes and mobile sensing nodes to generate a continuously updated spatial Air Quality Index (AQI) model. The proposed system employs low-cost sensing nodes capable of measuring particulate matter (PM2.5), temperature, humidity and geographical location. Data collected from these sensing nodes are integrated with AQI data obtained from existing government monitoring stations and processed in a centralized backend. The heterogeneous data are converted into a common AQI representation and used to generate a city-wide spatial AQI model capable of estimating air quality at locations where no physical monitoring station exists. The generated spatial AQI model serves as the basis for multiple environmental applications. In one embodiment, the system performs exposure-aware route recommendation by estimating AQI along alternative travel routes and recommending routes that reduce pollution exposure. The same spatial model may also be used for pollution visualization, environmental monitoring, predictive air-quality analysis and other smart-city applications. By utilizing low-cost PM2.5-centric sensing nodes together with existing monitoring infrastructure, the proposed system enables dense deployment of sensing nodes at a significantly lower cost than conventional air-quality monitoring systems while improving the spatial resolution of urban air-quality information. The invention provides a scalable framework for real-time environmental monitoring and intelligent decision support in urban environments.
