Abstract: Abstract Coral reefs are essential marine ecosystems that support biodiversity, fisheries, tourism, and coastal protection. However, they are increasingly affected by pollution, rising sea temperatures, and climate change, leading to coral bleaching. Regular monitoring of coral health is important, but traditional methods are time- consuming, costly, and require expert analysis. The present invention proposes an automated system for detecting coral health using artificial intelligence and image processing. Underwater coral images often suffer from poor lighting and color distortion; therefore, Retinex-based image enhancement is applied to improve image quality. The enhanced images are then analyzed using a Vision Transformer (ViT) deep learning model to classify corals as healthy or bleached. The proposed approach achieves high classification accuracy of about 94%, outperforming conventional CNN-based methods. A simple graphical user interface (GUI) is also developed to allow users to upload coral images and obtain instant results. The system enables fast, accurate, and automated coral reef monitoring to support marine research and conservation efforts.
