Abstract: Abstract of the Invention TrailSense is an offline trail navigation and detour recovery system for places where GPS or network is not reliable. The system uses smartphone inertial and heading sensors to estimate the movement of the user and saves the walked route as relative trail nodes. When a recorded part of the trail is found blocked during return, the original route is kept and a detour tracking state starts. The movement walked after that is recorded as a branch of a trail graph and checked against the recorded trail using position, heading, continuity of movement and confidence. When the confidence is enough, the branch is joined with the stored trail and a new return route is generated for offline guidance. Checkpoints and confidence values handle the sensor drift. No GPS, internet or external infrastructure is needed.ing Approach
