Abstract: A disposable surgical tooltip system (100) configured for detachable use with a reusable tool shaft (108) for robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery, and a method of actuation of the system (100) is disclosed. The system (100) comprises a compliant tooltip assembly (102) including a grasper unit (102A) having a pair of grasper jaws configured to provide at least one of a grasp motion and a yaw motion, and a compliant flexure section (102B) comprising a plurality of triangular flexural pivots (202) arranged in a linear stack to provide pitch motion through elastic deformation. An actuation arrangement (104) comprising a plurality of conduits (130) and a plurality of tethers (120) extends through the compliant flexure section (102B). An actuation control assembly (106) implements a rotational twisted string actuation mechanism to provide bidirectional actuation, and a coupling unit (112) detachably attached to the transmits rotary input motion.
