MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202531051992 A) filed by Indian Institute Of Technology on May 29, 2025, for U-Tube Wave Energy Extractor With Stepped Vertical Tube For Varying Natural Period Of Water Column.

Inventors include Bhaskar, Gaurav; and Sarkar, Dr. Arunjyoti.

The application for the patent was published on July 17, 2026, under issue no. 29/2026.

Abstract: U-TUBE WAVE ENERGY EXTRACTOR WITH STEPPED VERTICAL TUBE FOR VARYING NATURAL PERIOD OF WATER COLUMN The present invention relates to a wave energy extraction system (100). The system (100) comprises a floating U- tube structure including a pair of vertical tubes (102) fluidly interconnected through at least one horizontal tube (104) to define a liquid-column flow path. A liquid column disposed within the U-tube structure oscillates in response to ocean waves. A power take- off arrangement (106) comprising a turbine extracts energy from oscillation of the liquid column. At least one of the vertical tubes (102) comprises stepped portions (110) having different cross-sectional areas. The system further comprises a water storage arrangement (108) and a pumping arrangement configured to selectively introduce or remove water from the liquid column to vary an effective length of the liquid column. Variation in the effective length tunes a natural oscillation period of the liquid column for resonance with varying wave periods, thereby improving wave energy extraction efficiency under varying sea states.
