Abstract: Abstract The present invention relates to the development of an eco-friendly and sustainable composite membrane fabricated using the green seaweed Ulva lactuca for the simultaneous removal of microplastics and heavy metal contaminants from polluted water. The invention provides a simple, cost-effective, and environmentally benign approach for producing a bio-based composite membrane by utilizing the natural polysaccharides and bioactive functional groups present in Ulva lacluca, thereby eliminating or minimizing the use of hazardous synthetic materials. The fabricated membrane is characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (PT! R), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), Brunauer—Emmett—Teller (BET) surface area analysis, Water Contact Angle Analysis, and mechanical strength evaluation to determine its structural, surface, morphological, physicochemical, and adsorption properties. The developed composite membrane demonstrates high efficiency in the simultaneous adsorption and filtration of microplastics and toxic heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr), while maintaining good water permeability, mechanical stability, and reusability. The invention offers a sustainable platform for advanced water purification and environmental remediation, _with .potential.applications in _wastewater_treatment,..industri al. effluent management, drinking water purification, environmental monitoring, and decentralized water filtration systems.
