Abstract: An aspect of the present disclosure is directed to upgrading data catalogs of a distributed data service while continuing to allow query processing. In one embodiment, a (digital processing) system responds, based on a first metadata, to metadata requests received from a set of query services, the first metadata being according to a first version of a data catalog. Upon receiving a change request to change the data catalog to a second version, the system locks modifications to the first metadata; installs a structure of the second version of the data catalog while retaining the first metadata according to the first version; transfers the first metadata stored in the first version to the structure to form a second metadata according to the second version; and locks modifications to the second metadata.
