MUMBAI, India, July 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641083194 A) filed by Dr. P. Indra Arulselvi on July 07, 2026, for Valorization Of Keratin From Chicken Feather Waste For Use In Repairing Damaged Hair.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for keratin extraction from chicken feathers. The process involves pretreatment using acetone to remove grease and blood stains, followed by extraction process using 0.4N KOH at 60-80°C for 2 hours. Then, it undergoes precipitation process using 2M HCl as precipitant, lower concentration of precipitant prevents peptide bond breakage and maintain structural integrity of keratin protein. The extracted keratin protein was purified, dried and stored. The efficacy of keratin in repairing chemically bleached hair strands were performed. Hair strands were bleached using H2O2 (v v-1), 0.1M Na2CO3/Na2HCO3, pH 9.0 buffer at 50°C for 1 hour and treated with various concentration of keratin solution. Keratin solution at 32 mg/ml keratin shows repairing of bleached damaged hair and retaining for 12-72 hrs. It provides a foundation for converting waste into valuable products in cosmetic industries by repairing damaged hair and reduces the burden on landfills.
