Abstract: VARACTOR-BASED NEAR-FIELD CONTROLS OF ANTENNA FOR BEAM SCANNING APPLICATIONS Provided a beam- scanning antenna system (100) and method (1200) for electronically steering a radiation beam without mechanical movement are disclosed. The system (100) comprises a dielectric substrate supporting a radiating patch (102), a reduced ground plane, a reflector plate (128), and segmented metallic strips (104,106) disposed adjacent to opposite sides of the radiating patch. One or more varactor diodes (108A,108B) connected between segments of the metallic strips are controlled through a DC biasing arrangement configured to apply variable reverse bias voltage. Variation of the reverse bias voltage (114) changes capacitance of the varactor diodes to generate controllable phase imbalance in near-field electric field distribution across an H-plane around the radiating patch, thereby enabling electronic beam steering. The reflector plate (128) enhances radiation directivity and realized gain while maintaining impedance bandwidth substantially constant. The disclosed arrangement enables wide-angle beam scanning with reduced system complexity and without requiring phased-array excitation or RF isolation circuitry.
