Abstract: The present invention relates to a visible light-mediated metal-free photocatalytic process for the synthesis of sulfonyl hydrazones. The process comprises reacting substituted sulfonyl hydrazide with an aldehyde or ketone compound in the presence of a photocatalyst under visible light irradiation in a suitable solvent system to obtain the corresponding sulfonyl hydrazone compound. In one embodiment, the reaction is carried out at room temperature using a visible light source such as a light- emitting diode, preferably a Kessil LED photoreactor light, in the presence of a photocatalyst such as Rose Bengal. The method enables efficient synthesis of a variety of sulfonyl hydrazone derivatives from different aldehyde and ketone substrates under mild conditions. The process avoids the use of metal catalysts and additional additives, thereby providing an environmentally benign and cost-effective approach.
