Abstract: Walking Centre Table ABSTRACT The Walking Centre Table is an innovative project that I tried to do by converting a usual centre table into a walking table with the help of simple mechanical and electrical concepts. This project is actually meant for showing that even a simple household item can become interesting and interactive by the mere application of engineering ideas. Instead of staying in one position like regular tables, this table can move or walk forward due to the special linkage mechanism attached to its legs. A DC geared motor is used in order to provide the rotation, which is then converted into a walking-like motion by a crank and connecting rod system. The idea was chosen because it is unique and catchy, along with being easy to build within the budget of a student. Most of the materials used in the project are pretty low cost, including plywood for the top surface, metal rods for the linkage, gears, nuts, bolts, bearings, and a simple motor driver. During the building of this project, I learned the importance of proper alignment and symmetry, as even a minor error in the measurement might affect the balance of the table. I also understood the influences of torque, speed, and load distribution on the movement of the mechanism. The legs were designed in such a way that they provide stability along with smooth movement on a flat surface. The Walking Centre Table may be used in exhibitions, science fairs, or as a demonstration model to explain the principles of mechanisms, linkages, and basic robotics. Moreover, it shows how furniture can be made more dynamic by adding motion and hence can trigger creative ideas in interior design. Overall, this project improved my understanding of mechanical design, enhanced my creativity, and gave me confidence in building innovative working models with limited resources and a budget. It also proved that engineering is not only about big machines but also about finding new ways to use simple concepts in everyday objects.
