Abstract: A water separation system (100) for fuel cell automotive powertrains is disclosed. Atmospheric air is filtered by an air cleaner (102), compressed by a compressor (104), cooled in a compressed air cooler (CAC) (106), and humidified in a humidifier (108) before being supplied to a fuel stack (110). The fuel stack (110) generates electricity and produces wet steam through an electrochemical reaction. The wet steam is supplied to a water separator (112) configured to separate liquid water from the wet steam such that heavier liquid water droplets are removed radially and dry steam is discharged axially. The water separator (112) includes a housing (120), tangential inlet nozzles (122-1, 122-2) configured to impart rotational velocity to the wet steam, a spiral guiding vane (124), a perforated circular wall (126), a water outlet port (130), and a steam outlet port (132) configured to discharge dry steam toward a steam turbine (114) mechanically coupled to the compressor (104) through a common shaft.
