Abstract: Provided herein is a method for treating water wherein the water comprises an amount of at least one dissolved sulphide and at least one microorganism, the method comprising the steps: i) contacting the water with a source of Fe2+ or Fe3+ ions to reduce the amount of the at least one dissolved sulphide, and ii) contacting the water with a percarboxylic acid to provide disinfection against the at least one microorganism; wherein step ii) is performed after step i). The reduction of the amount of the at least one dissolved sulphide improves the disinfection performance of the percarboxylic acid.
