The application for the patent was published on August 07, 2026, under issue no. 32/2026.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a zinc-iodine redox flow battery employing a bifunctional supporting electrolyte for suppressing zinc dendrite formation and improving utilization of iodine species during charge-discharge cycling. The zinc-iodine redox flow battery comprises a catholyte including potassium iodide and ammonium chloride, an anolyte including zinc chloride and ammonium chloride, and a positive electrode and a negative electrode separated by an ion exchange membraneAmmonium chloride is present in both the catholyte and the anolyte in an amount effective to enhance iodine redox reversibility, promote substantially uniform zinc plating and stripping, suppress hydrolysis of zinc species, and reduce internal resistance. The zinc-iodine redox flow battery exhibits improved electrochemical performance, reduced “IR drop” (Internal resistance) enhanced power density, and stable charge-discharge cycling, thereby rendering the battery suitable for long-duration and large-scale energy storage applications.
