The Science and Technology for Women (STW) programme under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India, supports applied research and development (R&D) projects aimed at addressing women-centric issues through the development, adaptation and dissemination of appropriate technologies for livelihood improvement, drudgery reduction and improvement in their quality of life. The programme also supports the establishment of Women Technology Parks (WTPs) to promote field-level demonstration and training centers to facilitate the appropriate utilization and transfer of these technologies to women, particularly in rural and resource-poor areas. During the last five years, total 43 projects have been sanctioned and implemented under the STW programme. The state and district-wise details of projects, particularly in Andhra Pradesh are placed at Annexure-I.
Through the establishment of Women Technology Parks (WTPs), efforts are made to provide training to women in rural and peri-urban areas on appropriate technology models demonstrated at these parks. This aims to support their skill development and capacity building through science and technology-based interventions, utilizing area-specific resources, with the objective of promoting local self-reliance and sustainable economic growth. The number of women beneficiaries covered under WTPs, state and district-wise, particularly in Andhra Pradesh are placed at Annexure-II.
The Department periodically monitors and reviews projects under the STW programme through progress reports, field visits and third-party evaluations (wherever feasible) to assess their impact on women's livelihoods and access to technology. A study report on Women Technology Parks (WTPs) highlighted measures for their sustainability and found that WTPs have strengthened linkages between rural women and S&T institutions, enhanced awareness of science and technology, improved coordination with local authorities, and created greater opportunities for income enhancement through appropriate technology interventions, thereby contributing to improved quality of life and sustainable development in the implementation areas. A detailed report including success stories of WTPs, key learnings from these centers, and recommendations by expert groups, is available at website of DST (https://dst.gov.in/sites/default/files/Study%20of%20Women%20Technology%20Parks%20Report.pdf).
This information was given by the Minister of State (Independent charge) for the Ministry of Science and Technology & Earth Sciences Dr. Jitendra Singh in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
