The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that two workers died due to asphyxiation inside a septic tank in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. Reportedly, the incident occurred in the area of Sikandarpur Police Station on 14th September, 2026.
The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights. Therefore, it has issued notices to the State Chief Secretary, District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police, Muzaffarpur, calling for detailed reports on the matter within two weeks. It is expected to include the status of the investigation in the matter and compensation, if any, provided to the Next of Kin (NoK) of the deceased workers.
According to the media report, carried on 15th September 2026, the workers were removing shuttering from the septic tank when the incident happened. The matter is being investigated to determine whether there was any breach of safety protocols.
