Under Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), a total of 20,149 Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) have been opened across the country till 30.06.2026, out of which 1833 JAKs have been opened in the State of Kerala. The district-wise number of JAKs opened in the State of Kerala is at Annexure.
The product basket under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojna has 2,110 medicines and 315 surgicals, medical consumables and devices, covering all major therapeutic groups, such as cardiovascular, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, anti-infectives, anti-allergic and gastro-intestinal medicines and nutraceuticals.
During the last five financial years i.e. 2021-22 to 2025-26, PMBJP has made sales of Rs. 7,873.85 crore through Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country which has led to savings of approximately Rs. 37,200 crore to the citizens.
Government has adopted a franchise-like model for opening of Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs). Any individual entrepreneurs, non-governmental organisations, societies, trusts, firms, private companies, etc., can apply for opening of Jan Aushadhi Kendras, through the scheme's website (www.janaushadhi.gov.in) across the country including those in Kerala. To facilitate the opening of Jan Aushadhi Kendras in the underserved areas, Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI) is regularly writing letters to the concerned administration/district magistrate for providing free space to the applicants in government hospitals.
To address supply gaps and ensure uninterrupted availability of products at JAKs, the following measures have been put in place:
To ensure that only quality medicines are supplied through Jan Aushadhi Kendras, the following quality assurance mechanisms have been put in place:
(i) Procurement only from WHO-GMP certified manufacturers: Medicines are procured only from pharmaceutical units compliant with World Health Organization-Good Manufacturing Practices (WHO-GMP).
(ii) Distribution only after 100% pre-testing of all medicine batches: Random testing of 100% batches supplied at PMBI's warehouses, and medicines are dispatched for supply to JAKs only after successful quality test.
(iii) Testing through NABL-accredited laboratories: Samples are tested only in laboratories accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), which are also assessed by PMBI for compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
